The New Normal Tableware Collection
"The New Normal" collection is a testament to Boir's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design, offering a fresh perspective on the evolving dining landscape. Each piece in the collection serves as a conduit between intimacy and distance, enabling safe food sharing while preserving the essence of communal dining.
Boir's founders, Ivan Zidar and Vlatka Leskovar-Zidar, ingeniously blend form and function, crafting pieces that reimagine traditional dining rituals while embracing the ethos of safety and connection. Inspired by the need for safe social interaction during the pandemic, the collection features a harmonious marriage of steel and stone, symbolizing resilience and solidity in uncertain times.
At the heart of the collection lies a profound understanding of human nature—a recognition of our innate desire for communion and shared experiences. Boir acknowledges that dining is not merely a utilitarian act but a celebration of life itself. Through their innovative designs, they bridge the gap between intimacy and distance, offering a glimpse into a future where safety coexists harmoniously with togetherness.
"We wondered what would happen with meals that were traditionally shared among diners, and how restaurants could avoid using large plexiglass barriers that lessen the dining experience," shares Boir studio on their website. "The ritual of sharing bread, cold cuts, bites, and dessert is a crucial part of the eating culture, and we wanted to preserve it even in these challenging circumstances."
Central to the concept of "The New Normal" is the delicate balance between intimacy and safety. The collection's design enables safe food sharing between diners through subtle yet effective protective barriers, ensuring physical distance without compromising the communal dining experience. These barriers, crafted with meticulous attention to detail, serve a dual purpose – safeguarding diners while evoking a sense of comfort and reassurance.
Artistry on the Table: Steel and Stone
The collection's centerpiece is its ingenious use of materials. Steel and stone, typically associated with coldness and rigidity, are transformed into vessels of warmth and connection. Organic stone fragments soften the geometric precision of steel, creating a harmonious balance between form and function. Each piece tells a story—a narrative of resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity.
Take, for instance, the Dessert for Two design—an elegant juxtaposition of minimal stone dishes and elongated spoons. Couples can now indulge in the act of feeding each other with a newfound sense of safety and intimacy. Likewise, the T-shaped prosciutto serving plate, featuring a sleek steel design, offers a modern interpretation of a traditional concept, inviting diners to savor each bite with heightened awareness.
Boir Studio's innovative approach to tableware has garnered international acclaim, with "The New Normal" collection gracing the covers of prestigious design publications and captivating audiences at renowned exhibitions such as the "Time Space Existance" at Palazzo Mora during the Venice Biennale of Architecture.
