A Gastronomic Journey Through Towns and Islands of the Šibenik – Knin Region

There aren't so many places on Earth where tradition, nature, history, and gastronomy dance in perfect harmony, but, Šibenik-Knin region could proudly put itself on that peculiar list. With two National parks, 14 medieval fortresses, 230 cultural monuments, 300 islands, and 600 archaeological localities – this region is, with good reason, the inescapable Mediterranean getaway. It's one of the places where in one moment, you can learn a lot about history and admire many monuments, and in a second, swim in crystal clear waters and tickle your taste buds with gastronomic delights. A paradise, that's for sure! So how about exploring all the hidden gems of the Šibenik region while immersing yourself in the fullness of traditional flavors on each stop? Sounds good, right? Pack your bags, and let's go together on a tailor-made holiday through the wonders of this beautiful Croatian region.

First Stop: Skradin

We can't imagine a better way to start our journey than with Bill Gates's favorite place in the world – the tiny village of Skradin. Synonymous with unspoiled nature and exquisite gastronomy, Skradin will make you vow to return and stay. This charming town lies on the Krka River, at the point where freshwater mixes with the Adriatic Sea. Yep, breathtaking views are guaranteed! Stroll through narrow Skradin streets, sit in one of many local restaurants, and try traditional delicacies. Start with Skradin risotto, which delighted even the world-famous chef Anthony Bourdain. Holy S..t, this is so good! – his words. And if you are a dessert lover, the Skradin cake, which has been prepared in this region for various celebrations since the 14th century, will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. Don't believe us? Come and try it yourself!

Moreover, this gem of the Šibenik region is surrounded by vineyards and wineries, including the highly acclaimed Bibich Winery in nearby Plastovo village. Bibich wines found their place on the wine lists of some of the world's finest restaurants in cities of New York, Tokyo, Stockholm, etc. So how about sipping a glass and enjoying the views of the vineyards?

Indulge in the Magic of Krka's Waterfalls

From Skradin, a town over 6,000 years old, we set off to one of Croatia's premier scenic attractions – Krka National Park. Just a 25-minute ferry ride upstream, you will find yourself in front of the breathtaking cluster of waterfalls, of which Skradinski Buk is the most famous one. Untainted flora and fauna that is hard to see in this modern world drew in many world-famous celebrities, Will Ferrell, Jon Bon Jovi, Magic Johnson, and so on.

Next: The city of Šibenik

When you take all the Krka's beauty in and fill your body and mind, it is time to sit in a car and drive to our next destination – the city of Šibenik. Only 20 minutes of drive from Krka National Park, Šibenik will win your heart with its charm. History lovers, are you here? How about visiting one of the Šibenik fortresses? Or all, if you have enough time. Baraone, St. Michael's, or St. John's. All these fortresses have something special that will leave you in awe. Game of Thrones fans will especially appreciate visiting St. John's fortress, where the tv show was filmed. Šibenik's old town's maze of narrow cobblestone streets is perfect for getting a feeling of how the locals live. There you will find places such as a Michelin award-winning restaurant and numerous Dalmatian taverns that offer authentic gastronomic pleasures. Šibenik traditional cuisine is typically Mediterian, with olive oil as an integral part of making any dish. Try a variety of seafood specialties, such as crabs or mussels, alla buzara, brodet, risottos, or fish soups. Oysters are here a delicacy, so definitely put that on your must-eat list! And did we mention peka? A favorite local dish. Peka is a traditional method of cooking lamb, potatoes, and vegetables with oil in a dome-shaped pot on an open fireplace.

Islands: Murter, Zlarin, Prvić, Kaprije and Kornati

Is there a better way of ending a journey than relaxing on an island and recharging batteries? There are so many island gems in the Šibenik-Knin region, and it is hard for us to pick just one. So we'll leave that decision to you. Don't worry; there are no wrong choices. Whatever island you choose, expect exceptional beauty, stunning views, and a clear blue sea. And yes, delicious local cuisine! From freshly caught fish, crabs, and shellfish to the famous Kornati lamb, prosciutto, and pancetta, do we need to say more?

If you are searching for a perfect place for your holiday, full of tradition, history, and rich gastronomy, we can't think of a better place to spend your free days than the Šibenik – Knin  region. So book your stay today, and discover it yourself!
