Brač stone — Croatian high quality stone which adorns the White House

The stone of Brač is part of Croatian architectural tradition and is a material that has been used since the Romans.

Superior, high-quality, first-rate... These are just a few adjectives that describe this island resource. From jewellery to monumental architecture, this material can be used to create a wide range of artwork. The Diocletian Palace, the Parliament House in Budapest, and The White House (according to legend) are some of the world's most famous structures built from Brač stones. It has a rich, pearly texture and is classified as a natural white commercial marble of sedimentary origin. A curious fact about it is that it was originally collected by shepherds and farmers to clear the soil. The fact that it cannot be found anywhere else in the world makes it a true national treasure.

An Essential Part of Everyday Island Life - The Value of Stonemasonry

This is precisely why Brač stone is so important here. In some way, the activities of the islanders will be intertwined with the greatness of this unique limestone at some point during their lives.

Apart from locals, the world-famous Klesarska stone masonry school in Pučišća attracts young people from all over the world who are curious to learn the art. This is where hundreds of top craftsmen were raised, and many families have been dedicated exclusively to picking and processing this valuable resource for generations. The field has evolved into one that is highly lucrative, in high demand, and honorable.

"Our Stone masonry school motto, which has been around for more than 110 years, is "an excellent choice and a secure job!" This leads us to the conclusion that stone masonry is a traditional craft worth nurturing, teaching, and learning."

Among the island's most striking attractions are the piles of raw stone piled into walls along Polish roads. This stone contains the same amount of stone, albeit raw, as the existing Egyptian pyramids, about 7 million cubic meters. Earlier, we discussed the tradition of collecting and sourcing the stone and its value to clearing the island's soil. It might be interesting to know that during the Venetian administration, no young man on Brač could marry unless he could prove he had planted a hundred olive trees.

Brač - The Island of Beauty That Will Make Your Visit Worthwhile

More than its beautiful historical sights, Pučišća is also full of crystal-clear waters, coves, and intact nature. If you are a true sportsman, you may be excited about all the activities offered, including cycling, paragliding, windsurfing, etc. On the island of Brač, Zlatni Rat is one of the most famous and picturesque Croatian beaches and is an ideal Instagram-worthy location.

We recommend exploring the island's history, trying out limestone hand-made jewellery, and enjoying the beauty of its nature if you are planning on visiting the "longest and most elevated" island on the Croatian coast.
