Croatian Graševina Wins Three Golds at Decanter World Wine Awards

The world of wine has a new star, and it shines brightly over Croatia. In a stunning display of excellence, Croatian Graševina wines have taken home not one, not two, but three gold medals at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2023. These accolades are a testament to the skill and dedication of Croatian winemakers, who have long been producing exceptional wines that capture the essence of their region.

A Triumph for Croatian Wines

This year, out of the 480 wines submitted from Croatia, an impressive 25 secured the coveted gold medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards, with an astounding three of them going to the Graševina variety.

Graševina, also known as Welschriesling, holds a special place in the hearts of Croatians. This white grape variety is not only Croatia's most prevalent but also one of the most versatile. It thrives in continental Croatia, known for its fertility and the quality of the grapes it yields, making it a favorite among wine enthusiasts. The finest Graševina wines predominantly hail from the regions of Slavonia and Baranja, specifically from vineyards in Kutjevo, Đakovo, Daruvar, Slavonski Brod, and Ilok. However, this varietal also finds its way from the hilly landscapes of Zagorje and Međimurje

A Symphony of Aromas and Flavors

Graševina wines are celebrated for their refreshing nature, pleasant bitterness, balanced acidity, fruity character, and distinctive floral notes that grace the nose. These wines are the perfect antidote to sweltering summer days, offering a welcome respite with every sip. The versatility of the Graševina grape allows for the production of various wine styles, including sparkling wines, orange wines, and dessert wines, depending on the vineyard's location, harvest timing, and cellar techniques.

Croatians love to drink it in combination with sparkling mineral water. Yep, you read that right! This delicious cocktail, called Gemišt, is made with these two well-chilled ingredients mixed together in a glass.

The Golden Champions

So, who are the Croatian golden champions? Two prestigious wineries – Kutjevo Winery and Vina Belje!

Two gold medals went to the prestigious Kutjevo Winery. Their Graševina from the 2022 harvest claimed the spotlight with a gold medal, boasting a fruity aroma reminiscent of lemons, apples, and grapefruits, coupled with floral hints of jasmine, linden, and acacia, and herbal notes reminiscent of nettle flowers. Kutjevo Winery also clinched gold for their elegant Graševina Ice Wine from 2018. Crafted from grapes harvested well after their usual ripeness, typically when the temperature in the vineyard is -7°C or lower, these wines are exceptional not only in Croatia but globally, receiving top honors from wine connoisseurs.

The third Decanter World Wine Awards gold medal went to the exceptional Vina Belje Graševina 2006. With its expressive yellow hue tinged with green, this wine is crafted from meticulously hand-picked grapes sourced from the finest locations in Belje's vineyards. This premium Graševina entices with its fragrance, full-bodied flavor, and freshness, offering a rich tapestry of fruit notes, including green apples, mandarins, and grapefruits, intertwined with floral hints.

Croatian Graševina wines have once again proven their mettle on the global stage, securing three gold medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023. With its rich history, alluring aromas, and versatile flavors, Graševina remains a cherished treasure in Croatia's winemaking heritage. Whether enjoyed as a standalone varietal or in delightful concoctions like the Gemišt, Graševina shines as a symbol of excellence in Croatian wine. So, why not raise a glass of award-winning Graševina and toast to its well-deserved accolades? Cheers!
