Croatia is famous for many things, including its striking red and white squares (affectionately called „cubes“) that symbolize the nation's vibrant spirit. But now, get ready for a twist! One of those cubes, completely painted in a dazzling shade of red, is about to venture into the final frontier: space! Croatia is on a thrilling mission to join the elite club of spacefaring nations with its very own satellite, CroCube. Guided by an unwavering team of dedicated volunteers and fueled by the passionate support of a vibrant community, CroCube is set to make history as the first-ever Croatian space satellite. And guess what? You have the chance to be a part of this extraordinary journey too!

A Vision Takes Flight
In 2022, a group of volunteers, led by the visionary Daniela Jović, director of Spacemanic, embarked on the CroCube mission. Spacemanic, known for its expertise in satellite launches, sought to replicate the success of Slovakia, where the launch of the first Slovak satellite gave rise to a thriving industry. CroCube's team, which currently consists of around twenty members, comprises students, active and retired professionals with diverse backgrounds in engineering, programming, radio communications, graphic design, and marketing. Legal experts and external consultants also provide valuable support. Notable personalities such as Ante Radonić, Lana Ceraj, Vernesa Smolčić, Hrvoje Tkalčić, and others from the scientific community have joined forces with CroCube, further bolstering the project's credibility.
Small, Yet Powerful
Despite its modest size, CroCube's impact will be far from small. Measuring just 10x10x10 centimeters, this 1U cube satellite represents a new frontier in space exploration. Cube satellites, or cubesats, have gained popularity due to their cost-effectiveness and impressive capabilities. These miniature satellites offer a range of possibilities, including the detection of gamma-ray bursts and Earth observation. CroCube embraces this trend and adds a touch of Croatian identity by sporting the iconic red color of our world-famous building blocks.
Affordability and Ambition
One remarkable aspect of the CroCube project is its cost-efficiency. With a total budget of just €130,000, which includes the involvement of Croatian companies in the production, assembly, testing, and launch of the satellite, the project has already secured more than half of the required funds through generous contributions from corporations, schools, associations, and individuals on the Croinvest crowdfunding platform. The anticipated launch of CroCube is scheduled for no later than February of next year.
From Selfies to Space Modules
As the first Croatian satellite, CroCube's primary objective is to demonstrate the nation's technological readiness. Initially, its role in space was envisioned as capturing breathtaking images of Croatia and transmitting a #Croselfie, while also serving as a satellite for amateur radio communication enthusiasts. However, as the CroCube project continues to evolve and attract more partners, it may become the first Croatian satellite to carry a fully Croatian-made space module from Zagreb's Pulsar Labs. Equipped with a camera and a digipeater for worldwide radio communication, CroCube is expanding its capabilities and aspirations.
A Green Approach
To maximize the chances of success, the CroCube team has chosen SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, renowned for its history of successful launches. This decision not only increases the mission's prospects but also minimizes the environmental impact. By utilizing a reusable rocket, future launches can significantly reduce the carbon footprint. Moreover, the satellite itself will leave no trace behind, as it will burn up upon reentry into the Earth's atmosphere, leaving only a rich legacy in Croatian history.
Making Croatia's Mark in Space
The CroCube project challenges the fact that Croatia is one of the last EU countries yet to launch its satellite into space. Neighboring countries such as Slovenia and Albania have already taken the leap, while Montenegro and Serbia are initiating their space programs. CroCube has already garnered significant media coverage and public support, allowing citizens to participate by donating through the Croinvest platform. By doing so, they will send both CroCube and their names into space while also receiving special gifts.
With CroCube, Croatia is poised to make an indelible mark in space exploration. This ambitious project, driven by a passionate team and supported by a vibrant community, embodies the nation's ingenuity and determination to venture into the final frontier. As the countdown begins, the CroCube team and supporters eagerly await the moment when this small but mighty satellite takes flight, ushering in a new era for Croatian space science.
