Morlacco – An Outdoor Gastronomic Experience

Morlacco is more than just a museum; it's a sensory journey through Dalmatia's heritage. Situated on a rocky plateau above Vulić Dolac, this presentation center is a testament to the area's enduring spirit. The site rises from the remnants of an old bauxite mine, transforming into a fragrant oasis that welcomes those seeking relaxation and refreshment after exploring the nearby attractions of Paklenica, Zrmanja, or the Zadar beaches.

Opened less than two years ago, Morlacco captivates visitors with its unique ambiance, delectable food, and exquisite wine. The museum's design honors its industrial past, preserving the aged concrete structures and mining buildings with minimal intervention. This approach accentuates the site's raw, untouched beauty, contrasting starkly with the industrialization efforts that once sought to alter the region's pastoral lifestyle.

The Bura Tasting Center

Central to the Morlacco experience is the Bura Information and Tasting Center, where the secrets of traditional Dalmatian cuisine are unveiled. This "open-air museum" allows visitors to explore several rooms within the abandoned mining complex, each narrating the story of life before industrialization.

One room, encircled by an original stone wall, features an old vine and offers visitors a chance to savor a glass of local wine. Another room, reconstructed with Pag stone, showcases the harsh beauty of the Pag karst terrain and pairs it with samples of top-quality Pag cheese. In adjacent rooms, guests can taste sliced prosciutto, šokol, and pancetta or sample homemade brandies. A small olive grove highlights the heritage of Maslenica, offering premium olive oil tastings, while a fig tree room presents honey, dried figs, and fig cakes for visitors to enjoy.

The 90-minute guided tour, costing 40 euros per person, delves into the flavors, aromas, and history of the Zadar hinterland and the Podvelebit region. The journey begins with a documentary film in the former bauxite mine, detailing the mine's history and the local relationship with food, all influenced by the powerful Bura wind.

A Scenic and Culinary Delight

Surrounded by symmetrically planted lavender fields, ancient olive trees, and stone structures, Morlacco overlooks the sea and the village it protects. The local spices used in the unique souvenirs available at the on-site shop further enhance the sensory experience.

During the summer months, the highlight of Morlacco is its industrially designed outdoor space, perfect for private parties. With light music and a gentle breeze from Velebit, guests can fully immerse themselves in the Dalmatian way of life, enjoying relaxation and peace without the intrusion of nearby neighbors. For families, a play area for children and secure parking for many cars ensure a hassle-free visit.

Morlacco provides a perfect escape from the summer crowds and heat. A trip to this unique destination promises to be educational, satisfying to the appetite, and deeply connected to nature. Visitors leave with invaluable memories of the Zadar hinterland, enriched by the flavors and stories of a region shaped by the indomitable Bura wind.
