The Story of Ružica

Once upon a time, in the bygone centuries of the Frankopan noble family's reign in Croatia, after the grape harvest, a unique event took place in the vineyards – the selection of Ružica. But unlike many conventional beauty contests, this young woman wasn't only judged by her looks; she was also admired for her hard work and dedication. The chosen Ružica would be adorned with vine leaves and, accompanied by the enchanting sounds of traditional folk instruments, lead a procession into the town. Imagine what a celebration it was! The last recorded occurrence of this event dates back to the 19th century, in 1880. But it doesn't end here.

Ružica Vinodola Festival 2023

Drawing inspiration from this fascinating story, the Ružica Vinodola festival as we know it today came to life. Every year, towards the end of August, twelve young women compete for the prestigious title of Ružica Vinodola through a three-day series of captivating games. These games are intricately tied to winemaking, viticulture, and the customs of Vinodol's past. Some of the most mesmerizing activities occur on the first day amidst the romantic ambiance of the Pavlomir vineyards - one of the most renowned wineries in Croatia.

Here, you will witness the skill of the Ružice as they carry clusters of grapes, mastering the art of manually pressing the grapes in specially crafted containers. While you're there, be sure to indulge in the authentic delicacies of the region and immerse yourself in the charms of the Old Town, brought to life with the harmonious melodies of Klapa, a traditional a cappella singing group, and talented local musicians.
