The Best 5 Sunny And Snowy Winter Escapes in Croatia

Croatia has multiple personalities during winter time. In one region, you will experience a snowy winter wonderland with a cup of hot cocoa in your hands; in the other, you will enjoy sunny weather while lounging on a shore with the Adriatic sea as a backdrop. Croatia must be on your travel list if you tend to fluctuate between these two very different types of winter escapes. In a three or four hours drive, you can go north, south, east, and west… and see mountains, vineyards, lakes, waterfalls, and a crystal clear sea. To help you find the place that best suits your wants and needs, we have compiled a list of our favorite Croatian cities that are perfect for a winter getaway.

Mrkopalj

This charming little place in Gorski Kotar becomes a snowy winter oasis, perfect for all who love skiing and sledding. In the heart of Mrkopalj, there is the Čelimbaša ski resort, which offers three ski slopes; Tourist (red), 1350m long, Dinkova (black), 500m long, and Sunčana (also red), 1000m long. Surrounded by a beautiful forest, this small ski resort cannot be compared to Zermatt in Switzerland and Val d'Isere in France, of course, but that is exactly its charm. An intimate family environment ideal for enjoying and recharging your batteries. In and around the town are many beautiful wooden houses, which very often come with fireplaces, saunas, and hot baths, perfect for warming up and snuggling up!

Dubrovnik

If skiing and wearing double socks aren't your thing, head over to the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. Primarily known as a filming location for the TV series Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik's mild and sunny winter climate will warm up your cheeks instantly. Best of all, there are fewer crowds in winter, people are more relaxed and open, and you can experience a city without other people blocking the view. So have a little city stroll, visit the City Walls and Dubrovnik Cathedral, and drink a cup of coffee on the favorite Stradun.

Zagreb

We love Zagreb when it gets dressed in glittering canopies of fairy lights in winter. Visit the Upper Town and see the Stone Gate and impressive St. Mark's Cathedral, or stroll to the Lower Town and treat yourself to a delicious dessert in one of the many cosmopolitan cafes.

If you want to go skiing, just 20 minutes from the city is the famous Sljeme ski resort, where ski stars such as Alberto Tomba, Marc Girardelli, Janica Kostelić, Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn, and a lot of others have skied.

Ilok

Love eating locally grown and produced food and wine? Then you'll be delighted with this charming little town in the easternmost region of Croatia. Known as a wine kingdom, Ilok offers a one-of-a-kind view of the Danube river and its beautiful vineyards. Go to local restaurants, and try the local specialty ''fish paprikash'', made of river fish from the Danube. Is there a better way to finish the dish than with a glass of the best local wine Traminac? Pssst… Traminac was served at the coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Grožnjan

Ok, so there won't be snow, but this charming medieval town will win you over at first sight. A paradise for hedonists, Grožnjan is the perfect place for a romantic stroll through narrow, picturesque streets, enjoying delicious Istrian delicacies, such as truffles, olive oil, Istrian fuži, and drinking award-winning wines. There is a little bench by the viewpoint, perfect for resting your legs and enjoying the breathtaking view of nature and the medieval town of Motovun.

In the surroundings of Grožnjan, you can also enjoy numerous activities - from hunting to relaxation in wellness oases (we recommend the Beer spa, something exceptional!).

Enjoy your stay!
