Kažun – A Great Glimpse of Istria's Rich History

If you've always wanted to travel back in time to another period in history, a trip to these little stone houses will give you a great glimpse of Istria's rich history and its traditions. The kažun was on these grounds before the civilizations of Ancient Greece and Rome – how amazing is that? These ancient structures served as shelters for shepherds and farmers. Each Kažun has a unique design, with stones meticulously stacked to create a sturdy dome-like structure. This building technique was globally recognized in 2018 when this form of art was included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The greatest concentration of these Istrian ornaments is in the southern part of the Istrian peninsula, especially near Vodnjan. Almost 3000 kažuns can be found there. As most of them are hidden in the fields, olive groves, and vineyards, these stone houses await the adventurous souls willing to awaken their inner Indiana Jones. The best way to get to them is by bike or on foot, following one of the cycling or walking trails.

The Kažun Park

Not so far from Vodnjan, you'll find Kažun Park. This open-air museum showcases the fascinating journey of kažun construction, highlighting its four distinct stages, from the foundations to the walls and roofs until reaching its final form. Here you will not only learn about the rich history of this one-room house but also how to build it.

Namely, every year The Kažun Park organizes a workshop where participants actively engage in partially erecting a wall around the enchanting park. This hands-on experience will give you a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and skills required to create these remarkable structures.

Gastronomic Delights:

A visit to Istria would not be complete without savoring its delectable cuisine. Take a break and have lunch at traditional taverns or ''konobe'' that are nestled near the park. Each place provides a gastronomic journey that showcases the region's culinary prowess. Indulge in hearty dishes like Istrian fuži pasta with truffles, Boškarin meat, Maneštra, Mussels, and mouthwatering homemade desserts such as Kroštule, Vodnjan's pampagnac paired with local wines that delight the palate. Istria is also known for its cheeses, so if you are a fan of this gastronomic delight, after visiting the Kažun Park, head over to the Cheese Road of Istria and indulge in unique flavors.

So, whether you're a history enthusiast, nature lover, or adventurer searching for thrills, this enchanting park offers something for everyone. If you've decided to spend your holiday in Istria, a visit to Kažun Park is an ideal choice for a memorable day trip with your loved ones. It offers a delightful experience for families and friends, providing an opportunity to create cherished memories together amidst the picturesque surroundings of Istria.
