Nature’s Melting Pot Between Continental Croatia and the Mediterranean
Thanks to its specific geographical position, the Učka Nature Park has rich and diverse vegetation influenced by continental and Mediterranean climates. As a result, it is home to many rare plant and animal species, which makes it one of the most important points of biological diversity in Europe - and a beautiful destination for a day trip.
If you want to catch a breath of fresh air far from the city noise, Učka and Ćićarija will delight you with many hiking trails. No matter which route you take, you’ll discover old villages, beautiful viewpoints, and hidden places where history and tradition intertwine with pristine nature. The entire area of the nature park is also exciting for trail runners. Regardless of your fitness level or trail running experience, you’ll find the perfect trail for a weekend adventure or everyday training.
There are plenty of activities for those who want more of an adrenaline rush. The park has no less than eight trails of different categories for mountain biking, with a total distance of 180 kilometers! If sightseeing on two wheels is your thing, you’ll enjoy biking trails passing through various landscapes, coastal towns, and peaceful plateaus. On the northwestern slopes of Učka, you’ll find the Vela Draga canyon, a popular spot for free climbers. It’s mainly oriented towards the south and southwest, which makes it suitable for climbing all year round.
A Stunning 360° View Over the Entire Kvarner Bay
One of the most majestic spots of the entire park is Vojak, the highest peak of the Učka Nature Park. It is located at 1,401 meters above sea level and is the highest point on the entire Istrian peninsula. Here, you’ll discover the historical tower built in 1911. In the past, it was utilized as the Austro-Hungarian naval observatory. Upon its renovation in 2004, it became the most prominent symbol of the park and has remained the most magnificent viewpoint in Istria. It is truly breathtaking, with a 360° view over Istria, Kvarner bay with the islands, the mountains of Gorski Kotar, Velebit, the Alps, and Italy!
Whether you prefer an active holiday or need a short getaway into nature, Učka can check all the boxes for you. You can head out on most hiking trails directly from the Opatija Riviera. Still, the park is also a short drive away from pretty much any town in Istria, including the international airports of Rijeka and Pula. If you’re unsure where to start your trip, the best starting point is the Poklon visitor center, situated on the pass between the mountains of Učka and Ćićarija.
