Vukovar: a City That Offers a Lot

Although we almost automatically associate Vukovar with war and the horrors that happened to this city, we must not forget what Vukovar actually is. It is a city that breathes and looks to the future, a city that cherishes and respects its past, a city that absolutely no one can resist, as Count Eltz could not resist. When you come to Vukovar today, you will be surprised by the beautiful baroque architecture, the abundance of greenery, the beautiful rivers of the Danube and Vuka, as well as the people who do their best to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

History of Vučedol

Vučedol is known as an archaeological site from the Neolithic. It was discovered by Josip Brunšmid in 1897. If you are wondering where it is, you will surely like the location. Namely, 5 km downstream from Vukovar, the oldest finds from the Starčevo culture were found. People from this culture inhabited the areas along the banks of rivers, which were quite fertile. Cave-type dwellings were built on the slopes of the hills, which were in the shape of figure eight. After the Starčevo culture, the Baden culture settled. These people lived in cylindrical pits, which also served as tombs. Human remains, as well as animal remains, were found in these pits. 3000 BC, The Vučedol culture begins to appear. At that time, about 3,000 inhabitants lived in Vučedol, and this became one of the most important centers of that era. This culture originated in Vučedol, but it also spread to Hungary. People were engaged in animal husbandry, hunting, and fishing. We must mention that this is the first time plates were being used for serving a meal. Interesting, isn't it?

Vučedol Culture Museum

The museum was founded in 2013 as a national museum after a long-term effort to place Vučedol in the ranks of archaeological parks and enter it into the arheological map of this part of Europe. The museum is located on the site where the first discoveries occurred. In 1938, the German archaeologist Robert Rudolf Schmidt discovered one of the largest objects, the Megaron Copper Caster, and the famous Vučedol Dove. The museum was opened to the public in 2015, and through 19 galleries in the exhibition area, evidence of the Vučedol culture civilization were presented. The museum itself takes you into the life of the Vučedol people and the way they lived it. Each room is themed, and the topics are the geological position of Vučedol, the emergence of culture, the arrival of Indo-Europeans, animal husbandry, agriculture, hunting and fishing, the settlement, the Vučedol house, weaving clothes, crafts and shoes, metallurgy, ceramics, horizon, calendar, graves, Vučedolac, religion, heirs and the creation of the museum itself.

What Can You See?

We are sure that both young and old would be surprised by the oldest prehistoric cart on four wheels, as well as the first real Indo-European house. But apart from that, you can also see the oldest Indo-European calendar, the foundry of the first serial production of metals and bronzes in the world, and the first known saw, not to mention the rich shapes and decorations of the beautiful Vučedol ceramics. What is certainly very interesting is being able to see the pit where the Vučedol Dove, the symbol of the city of Vukovar, was found.

If you want to experience the past in a completely different way, the Vučedol Culture Museum will reveal to you a completely new form of impressions, a unique combination of architecture, location, and the values of the history of Vučedol culture in a completely new and modern way. Trust us, you won't regret it!
