What is the first thought when we say Croatia? Is it the sea? The sun? A perfect summer getaway? You will be surprised to discover that this beautiful country is much more! Although this European country seems like an ideal summer destination at first glance, if you scratch a bit beneath its surface, you'll find a real gem still waiting to be discovered. And today, we introduce you to Karanac!
About thirty kilometers from the city of Osijek in the eastern part of Croatia, this little eco-village looks like it is frozen in time. With wide streets with traditional houses, long porches, and walls painted with one-of-a-kind motifs, Karanac really stands out. The atmosphere of this charming village is unique and will entirely teleport you to a different era. Especially when you visit the Street of Forgotten Time with pottery, cooper, carpentry, a weaving workshop, a barber shop, and a tavern. It is inspired by the famous street in Karanac called '' Obrtnička Ulica'' (eng. Craftsman Street), where there were over 30 masters and craftsmen, among them Geza Borbaš. You'll hear many stories about this guy; he is a legend in Baranja! Geza made the first Kulen in 1905, the king of all Croatian sausages. It is now the most prestigious and most expensive sausage-type product in Croatia. And a must-try if you are in Baranja! The best way to feel this place is undoubtedly through food. The traditional cuisine and recipes are passed down from one generation to the next. There is no better way to get an authentic experience than that, right? Your taste buds will be amazed!

Winter Fair (Zimski Vašar) in Ethno Village of Karanac
If you are a food lover looking for a unique culinary adventure, we recommend you visit Karanac during Winter Fair. With over 100 local producers of domestic products, Winter Fair or Zimski Vašar on Croatian is a perfect event to try and shop for different products that Baranja is famous for. Delicious cured meat products such as kulen, bacon, ham, sausage, cheeses, pastries, cakes, honey, and ground red pepper, guarantee a happy belly and soul. And did we mention the wines? Baranja region is known for its award-winning wines; Belje, Josić, Čočić, Kalazić, and the list goes on and on…
What would it be like in Karanac without their famous cuisine? At Vašar, try out the popular dish Čobanac (Shepherd's stew). It is traditionally prepared in Slavonia and Baranja with two-three different types of meat. The locals slowly cook it for several hours in a large kettle strung over an open fire. It's a bit spicy, but we think you'll love it. Also, try one of their famous freshwater fish specialties, such as fish stew, carp on forks, and catfish perkelt. Don't forget to toast with a shot of homemade brandy.
ČvarakFest – a unique experience for all foodies!
As part of the amazing Winter Fair, the ''ČvarakFest'' festival is also being held. It is a unique gastronomic experience for all food lovers, especially those who love the pantry and smokehouse specialties. The festival shows the guests the experience of traditional pork slaughter – from melting čvarci to preparing sausages and other specialties. Čvarci is one of the most famous dishes in Slavonia - and definitely a MUST TRY! Once a food for the poor, now a true delicacy, čvarci will amaze you with its aroma. These Slavonian chips are a fantastic winter snack made from pork scratchings soaked in milk and then roasted. Especially if served with delicious cured meat and a glass of good wine.
