Meet Green Sail: A Movement That Promotes Sustainable Tourism in Croatia

Croatia is a country blessed with natural beauty and is renowned for its stunning coastline, crystal-clear waters, and picturesque islands. So it's no wonder that it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in recent years. However, as the number of tourists has increased, so has their impact on the environment. The good news is that there are initiatives, like Green Sail, that aim to promote sustainable tourism in Croatia.

Croatia's Growing Nautical Tourism and Its Impact

Croatia's nautical tourism has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with more than 2,000 km of coastline, over 1,000 islands, and numerous bays and coves waiting to be explored. Nautical tourism in Croatia is supported by a well-developed infrastructure, including marinas, ports, and nautical centers that offer a range of services for boaters. These facilities provide everything from mooring and docking services to boat repairs, maintenance, and fueling. With its rich maritime heritage, favorable climate, diverse geography, and fascinating culture, Croatia has something to offer for visitors of all types.

In recent years, Croatia has become a top destination for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. The country's calm and sheltered bays, as well as its well-marked sailing routes, make it an ideal location for sailors of all levels. Yachting has also become increasingly popular, with numerous yacht charter companies offering luxury yacht rentals and customized itineraries.

But, all that increase in popularity, tourist arrivals, and the number of vessels sailing the Adriatic brings a strain and impacts the environment in a negative way. The discharge of waste and pollutants into the sea affects water quality and is harmful to marine life. Boat anchors and mooring lines can inadvertently damage delicate coral reefs, seagrass beds, and other habitats. In addition, the recycling system is inefficient, which causes a lot of plastic waste from charters, especially water bottles, to end up in mainstream rubbish or sometimes directly into the sea.

Thankfully, there are organizations and initiatives like Green Sail whose goal is to make Croatia's tourism completely sustainable. So, if you're looking for an eco-friendly way to explore this beautiful country, Green Sail Croatia has got you covered. With a focus on sustainable tourism, this innovative organization has partnered with many charter companies that offer sailing tours that will allow you to experience the natural beauty of Croatia while at the same time minimizing your environmental impact.

Green Sail and Their Goal of Sustainable Tourism

Green Sail is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable tourism in Croatia. Their mission is to reduce the negative impact of tourism on the environment and local communities while also educating tourists about sustainable practices. Their main focus is working with marinas and charter companies, but they also partner with other tourism businesses to promote sustainable practices and provide educational resources for tourists. Their Vision of educating, inspiring, and motivating the nautical community is closely tied to Sustainable Development Goal, Life Below Water, created by the United Nations.

Through their initiatives, Green Sail has partnered with more than 100 companies and organizations that have implemented their sustainable tourism practices. Their Green Flag Initiative provides flags for their charter partners that serve as an indicator that the company is fully committed to sustainable tourism. Their growing network of charter partners has more than 100 companies and more than 2000 yachts, boats, and other vessels flying their green flag. Partnering with marinas, Green Sail is aiming to increase awareness of separating waste and recycling. They are expanding the number of recycling facilities throughout the Adriatic and motivating marinas to prevent sea pollution by implementing their sustainable practices.

With their network of Tourism partners, Green Sail organizes Eco Walk Talk, based in Split. This walking tour is excellent for education and team building while also promoting Green Sail's sustainability initiatives. Along with Eco Walk, they also organize Underwater Beach Clean Ups, which removes large amounts of waste from underwater locations in bays and beaches around Split every year.

Sustainable tourism is essential in Croatia, as the country has a delicate ecosystem that is easily impacted by tourism. The country's mesmerizing coastline is home to many endangered species, including sea turtles and dolphins, and the Adriatic Sea is an important fishing ground. By promoting sustainable tourism, we can help protect the environment, support local communities, and ensure that future generations can enjoy Croatia's natural beauty. Green Sail excellently promotes sustainable tourism practices in Croatia, and their initiatives make a real difference.
