How fare ye’? Let us give you a royal welcome to one of the best-preserved monuments from the Medieval period.
The Dubovac Castle is the oldest cultural and historical monument in Karlovac, originating from the 13century. It was strategically built on a hill surrounded by an oak forest, which helped the castle survive many persisting sieges during its long-standing history.
Today, it houses a peaceful grill-oriented bistro where you can taste modern European cuisine. Bistro Kastel promises to give you the royal treatment with a wide selection of meals and a variety of refreshing drinks. If you want to feel like a Medieval knight or a duchess, read on to learn more about this gastronomic bastion.
It’s a Restaurant and a Museum!
The Dubovac Castle is a must-see tourist spot when you are visiting Karlovac. While approaching it, you will notice its massive walls and the tower. The latter is home to a permanent exhibition you are welcome to explore before you sit down for a meal in a bistro. What was once a watchtower is now a looking point, so you can get a nice view (and a photo) of the Karlovac area.
Once you pass the huge entrance doors, you will be greeted by design that goes in line with the exquisite location – wooden tables and chairs, dimmed ambient lighting coming from candles and lanterns, and wrought-iron pieces that put the final touch to Medieval authenticity.
Whether you will stop by for coffee and cake or a full-scale meal, the mood of Bistro Kastel will stay the same; quiet and relaxing.

Modern Gastronomy Built Upon Traditional Cuisine
The appealing menu is created on a rich gastronomic heritage enhanced with modern cooking techniques and enriched with fresh, locally grown produce from small-scale Croatian farmers that guarantee quality.
There is something for everyone – from homemade cold cuts and venison to risotto with prawns from the Adriatic Sea and hamburgers (vegetarian too). And wait till you hear about slowly roasted pork ribs that usually spend six hours in the making, the smell of freshly baked homemade bread, mushroom soup that’s a fan favorite, and dry red house wine Jakob Cuvée.
Parents will be happy to hear the bistro also offers a children’s menu – deep-fried chicken bars with fried potato, salad, and yogurt dip.
To Order or to Stay In?
Not many can brag they ordered a takeaway from a castle. Bistro Kastel has accommodated the modern lifestyle and allows you to order your food to go when in Karlovac. This might be convenient for the locals that are somewhat used to eating in a castle, but tourists are highly advised to make a reservation and enjoy the unique Medieval setting.
Takeaways can quickly become a catering service if you plan an event. And speaking of events, Bistro Kastel will gladly help you organize your wedding reception or any other type of private celebration where even dogs are welcome! It really does not get better than that.
Bistro Kastel is only a 10-minute drive from the city center of Karlovac. It has a dedicated parking spot for all guests but is far from experiencing traffic noise. So, plan your visit – closed on Tuesdays – and have a nice meal.
And once you are finished, the only thing left is to give you a royal send-off. Go thy way!
