A Fusion of Heritage and Innovation
Located at the main promenade by the beach in Mošćenička Draga, Konoba Zijavica celebrates the essence of local cuisine while offering a contemporary twist, inviting patrons on a compelling journey through the region's culinary traditions.
Here, centuries-old recipes are elevated with a touch of creativity, transforming familiar ingredients into culinary masterpieces that surprise and delight the palate. Each dish tells a story, honoring the heritage and authenticity of Kvarner's gastronomic treasures while embracing a modern approach that captivates food enthusiasts seeking both tradition and innovation.
A Feast for the Senses: Location, Ambiance, and Cuisine
Run by the warm and welcoming couple, Tea and Stiven Vunić, the goal of this family-owned gem is to keep the roots in tradition and simultaneously accept the modern challenges of haute gastronomy. The restaurant's menu is packed with seafood delicacies like the renowned Kvarner shrimp and Adriatic octopus, all caught by the restaurant's own fishermen. Konoba Zijavica offers a six-course tasting menu as well as à la carte dishes - think marinated red mullet, warm and cold fried codfish, oven-baked octopus, and tasty wild tuna. But that's not all; here, you can also try traditional Istrian specialties – such as Boškarin beef stew. The Istrian Boškarin is a specific breed of cattle native to the Istrian peninsula, which includes parts of Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. It's a robust and hardy breed known for its distinctive appearance—large, strong, and with distinctive lyre-shaped horns. Due to their strength and endurance, Boškarins were traditionally used for agricultural work, particularly in plowing fields and pulling carts. However, with modernization and changes in agricultural practices, their numbers declined significantly, and they were almost at the brink of extinction. Efforts have been made to preserve this indigenous breed, as it's considered a part of the cultural and historical heritage of the region.
One of this restaurant's trump cards is undoubtedly its location. The terrace, gently perched above the coastline, offers an unforgettable view of the enchanting crystal-clear waters of Kvarner, creating an ideal atmosphere to unwind and relish in the gastronomic journey. Yet, the interior space ain't lacking in charm either. The moment you step foot into Zijavica, you'll feel a blend of romance and tradition woven into every interior detail. The modern, industrial style intertwined with subtle touches of wood and stone crafts an ambiance that enchants with its delicate elegance and comfort.
Whether indulging in the flavors of the sea or savoring the richness of Kvarner's countryside, this place offers a unique opportunity to experience the region's culinary delights in a way that pays homage to tradition while embracing the exciting spirit of contemporary dining.
We definitely recommend trying their tasting menu, which is served exclusively during dinner from 18:00 to 22:00. Keep in mind the menu changes depending on the season and the daily availability of food.
